COMPUTER SCIENCE HACKATHON FACILITATOR

Overview:
Join Code Savvy for the Innovate for Good Hackathon, a transformative one-day event that empowers students ages 8-18 to explore coding, design thinking, and physical computing using the micro:bit. We’re seeking several enthusiastic and experienced teachers to facilitate the event, providing engaging computer science instruction, guiding students in creating impactful projects, and leading a showcase where students present their work to industry judges. This is a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of technologists and innovators while fostering a love for coding and creativity.
Responsibilities:
Event Preparation (4 hours)
- Attend a virtual onboarding call prior to the event to familiarize yourself with the schedule, materials, and expectations.
- Review all provided curriculum and resources to ensure readiness to deliver engaging and effective instruction.
- Collaborate with your co-facilitator to coordinate facilitation responsibilities.
Event Facilitation (6 hours)
- Teach foundational computer science concepts and micro:bit programming to students of various experience levels.
- Assist teams in brainstorming, designing, and developing their projects, ensuring an engaging and accessible learning experience.
- Support students in preparing their presentations, ensuring clarity, confidence, and creativity.
- Facilitate the project showcase where students present their projects to a panel of industry judges.
- Create an inclusive and encouraging environment where all students feel empowered to participate and learn.
- Collaborate with Code Savvy staff and industry mentors to ensure smooth event operations.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, computer science, STEM-related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 2 years of experience teaching or facilitating workshops with students ages 8-18, preferably in computer science, STEM, or related disciplines.
- Commitment to working collaboratively with other facilitators, volunteers, and industry professionals.
- Dedication to fostering an inclusive environment that supports students from diverse backgrounds, especially underrepresented groups in technology.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Experience in teaching basic coding concepts, design thinking, and physical computing.
- Experience working with micro:bit or similar hardware tools.
- Experience working in hackathons, STEM camps, or similar educational events.
