2023 MNCodes Educator Summit

Code Savvy Educate’s mission is to empower educators with the tools and resources they need to teach equitable and engaging computer science. We believe that every student and educator deserves access to computer science opportunities as it is a huge part of our daily lives
The MNCodes Educator summit is an annual opportunity where educators across the state of Minnesota learn together different teaching practices, curriculum and technologies that are related to computer science education. Our goal is to provide educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to make computer science education more accessible and engaging for all students.
This year, we have presenters from a wide variety of professional backgrounds! This enables us to create a space that is relevant to all educators, regardless of the grade they teach or their experience with computer science. Keep reading to learn more about our presenters and the sessions they will be leading at the MNCodes Educator Summit.
Sarah Carter - Computer Science in the 2019 MN Academic Standards in Science

In this interactive session, participants will have the opportunity to examine the connections between computer science and the 2019 MN Science Standards. They will also review a sample integrated lesson and brainstorm different resources and tools for integrating computer science into existing science content!
Jim Tannenbaum - Using BIPES with Raspberry Pi Pico to teach Computational Thinking Concepts

In this interactive lab, participants will learn how the Block Based Integrated Platform for Embedded Systems (BIPES) utilizes block-based programming to program controllers without code. Participants will learn how the Raspberry Pi can be paired with BIPES to offer a low-cost option for students to showcase computational concepts without requiring them to learn specific coding syntax.
Code Savvy Educate Team - CS Integration Framework

In this interactive session, the Code Savvy team will introduce participants to their CS Integration Framework. The framework serves as a guide for educators to use when planning an integrated computer science unit. Participants will gain tools and support from our team to help them begin developing computer science integrated content that is both engaging and effective for their students. This session is an excellent opportunity to learn more about how to get started with computer science in your classroom!
Emily Poster and Mahmoud Aliamer - Introduction to Computational Thinking

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to learn about Computational Thinking using Pear Deck. This session will provide an introduction to what Computational Thinking is and why it is crucial in students’ lives. The session will cover concepts such as Algorithm Design, Data, Abstraction, and Debugging and explore strategies for integrating these concepts with content that you already teach.
Dan McCreary - Using Chat GPT to Generate Coding Lessons

In this session, participants will explore how ChatGPT can be used to rapidly generate content for teaching computational thinking. The session provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the lesson and unit development process, highlighting the ways in which ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for educators. Participants will have access to reference curriculum for teaching Scratch, Python, Micropython and robots!
Kibret Yebetit - Girls Who Code Clubs: Getting Started

In this session, learn all about Girls Who Code Clubs and how to get one started in your school or community! Clubs are free programs for 3rd - 5th grade students to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models using computer science to change the world! Clubs can take place after school, on weekends, or during the summer, and they can be held in-person or entirely online!
We are excited about for upcoming MNCodes Educator Summit and cannot wait for the valuable insights and experiences our presenters will bring to the event!
